Midwifery
Ever since the first recorded accounts of birth, in countries all over the world, midwives have given care to women before, during and after a baby is born. In many societies today the health of most mothers and the newborn babies still depends on midwives. The word mid wife means "with woman".
Midwifery today negotiates a definition of health care for women which includes both medical and family perspectives. Modern midwifery embraces the principles of continuity of care, respect for the normal, enabling informed choices, family-centered care, and the validation of birth as far more than a "medical event".
